The Shed Brunswick
Residential

"It creates drama and an artistic quality that simply couldn't be achieved with traditional internal finishes."
A bold reinterpretation of a traditional farm shed, The Shed transforms an existing rural structure into a refined, bespoke residence that balances architectural precision with comfort and calm. While the exterior preserves the honest character of the original agricultural building, the interior has been meticulously crafted to deliver a highly resolved living environment that embraces its surrounding landscape.
Designed to evoke a sense of peace and serenity, the project reflects the owners' appreciation for considered design, craftsmanship, and the enduring beauty of natural materials. Expansive glazing frames ever-changing views across the farmland, while a restrained material palette reinforces the connection between architecture and place.
Glosswood's 90mm Lining Boards in Shou Sugi Ban – Omoku (Heavily Charred) wrap the internal walls and gently vaulted ceilings, creating a seamless architectural shell that anchors the bespoke living spaces within. The deeply charred finish establishes a dramatic contrast to the traditional corrugated exterior while providing a calm, textural backdrop that enhances natural light, concealed lighting, and carefully curated interior elements.
Reflecting on the material selection, the homeowner explains that the blackened timber was chosen to create "a seamless, inviting capsule" throughout the interior. "The play of light across the walls, particularly at night, enhances the natural imperfections of the timber," they explain. "It creates drama and an artistic quality that simply couldn't be achieved with traditional internal finishes."
The success of the project was driven by close collaboration between the client, architect, builder, and supplier, ensuring the timber lining was thoughtfully integrated into every aspect of the design. David reflects that the project team worked together to maximise the material's unique qualities, with carefully resolved detailing, concealed fixings, the gently vaulted ceiling, and integrated lighting all contributing to a seamless architectural outcome that celebrates both the craftsmanship and versatility of the timber.
Beyond its visual impact, the lining boards have become fundamental to the experience of the home. "The lining creates a unique atmosphere of calmness and serenity," the homeowner reflects. "Its acoustic performance is excellent, and the neutral black finish allowed us the freedom to introduce bold cabinetry, furniture, artwork and exposed services without visual distraction. The lining has exceeded our expectations in every way."The result is a sophisticated rural retreat where architecture, craftsmanship, and materiality come together in seamless harmony, demonstrating the transformative potential of thoughtfully detailed timber interiors.
